The Founder's Story

From a school project to a climate action plan to create an impact, get to know the story behind The Green Space Project and the founder himself!

Who Am I?

My name is Tarunpal Singh Dhamnait (Tarun Dhamnait for short), and I am the founder of The Green Space Project (TGSP, for short). I was born and raised in Brampton, Ontario, for the majority of my life until I moved to Waterloo to pursue a Bachelors of Science at Wilfrid Laurier University. With my strong science background, passion for innovation, and eagerness to create change in my community, I decided to make this project a reality.

The Story Behind The Green Space Project

Before making The Green Space Project a reality, it was a school project I completed for my Grade 10 Academic Science class back in 2016. The assignment was to develop a service or product that would help combat the climate crisis by following the process of innovation & design. Instantly, I thought of creating outdoor classrooms for schools since I knew my former elementary school had done that as part of an eco club initiative. I never thought that five years after that assignment, that I would be making it a reality. If it weren't for my former science teacher, Mr Singh, for assigning the project, I would not have seen myself starting this initiative in the first place!

Why Did I Start The Green Space Project?

I started this project to help create change in schools that are part of the Peel District School Board (PDSB). After completing 14 years of my education (both elementary and secondary) in the PDSB, I noticed that the schools I've attended lacked green spaces and engaging initiatives. With my project, I hope to help schools develop, implement, and maintain these green spaces through workshops, accessibility to special tool kits, and funding opportunities.

Goals I Want to Achieve Through the Project

While The Green Space project has its own goals, my personal goals for this project include:

  • Developing and enhancing my leadership skills by working with various teams to help my project run smoothly as possible

  • Showcasing the process of innovation and design for others to witness its practical applications concerning Climate Action

  • Encouraging future youth to take the initiative and turn small ideas into big solutions that help their community
